Whatever happened to being informed ?
Growing up I heard some great sayings. One of the best is" Always engage brain before putting mouth in gear". I try to learn about a subject and think it through before giving my opinion. I just wish the government and the politicians within would do the same. Case in point - the Arizona immigration controversy. Attorney General Eric Holder was testifying before congress several days after condemming the new Arizona law and admitted he HAD NEVER READ IT!! The congressman offered to give Holder his copy to read saying " it's 10 pages - much smaller than the 2,000 page Healthcare bill". Holder said he was waiting for his staff to review it. What, his eyes don't work ?? The news media doesn't help, presenting the law as a right to profile and arrest anyone who looks Mexican. Not reading the actual law gives deniability to those who want to smear it and excuse illegal immigration.
We've seen this all too often the past several years - a bill that has to be passed now is voted on, then when the fine print is revealed the politician says" that's not what my staff told me was in it " or " I didn't have time to read the amendments before the vote" . Nothing that congress votes on is needed so fast that they can't tale a day or two, or even an hour or two, to get inform themselves before they cast a vote. In the last election candidate Obama promised that ALL legislation would be available for days online before it was voted on. The recent healthcare scam threw that promise right out the window, and many Democrat congressman and senators under the bus.
We have to separate fact from fiction by getting the truth for ourselves - whether we like the results or not. And we have to hold all of our politicians ( of ANY party) accountable. Every general election - every primary and caucus.
An informed voter is a dangerous thing - especially to a complacent politician !!
